One of the greatest benefits of holding a naming ceremony is that you have complete freedom of choice when it comes to the order of events. Unlike a marriage ceremony, there are no legal components and no must-dos. Instead, the ceremony can be held when and where you like, and contain the activities you want.

In this article, we take a look at what the usual order of events for a naming ceremony are, plus some ideas on special moments you may wish to include in your child’s celebratory day.

General Order of Events for a Naming Ceremony

Whether your chosen baby naming celebrant has offered to draft an order of events or asked you to, it’s nice to check out other ideas. We've put together a general schedule of events for the ceremony, but remember, there is nothing set in stone for this celebration.

  • Welcome - the celebrant welcomes everyone and explains the purpose of the ceremony.
  • Poem, song or reading - a short poem or reading takes place to set the ceremony tone.
  • Naming of the baby - you announce your baby’s name to the world! Often this includes an explanation of why you have chosen their specific names and the meanings of their names.
  • Promises by parents - you declare your love for your child, promise to love and care for them. This can also include adding your wishes, hopes and dreams for their life.
  • Rituals - this could be the lighting of a candle, mixing of sands or planting of a tree. You might even want to create a time capsule for your child to open upon their 18th birthday. The options are unlimited and tailored to what feels right for you and your child.
  • Guardians - you acknowledge and appoint guardians for your child, a role similar to that of a Godparent. The guardians would already have accepted this position prior to the ceremony.
  • Reading, poem or blessing
  • The signing of an informal naming certificate - this is usually provided by your celebrant.
  • Presentation of your child to your guests - time for cuddles, congratulations and photos!

Next, we'll take a look at some ideas of activities to include during the ceremony.

What Else Can I Include in a Naming Ceremony?

Basically, anything you like, knowing of course, that your chosen naming ceremony celebrant needs to be comfortable with it too. Some of our favourite ideas include:

  • a video of your journey towards this day as parents, shown to guests and then kept for when your child is older
  • asking guests to write in a guest book their hopes and wishes for your child
  • siblings playing a special role in welcoming their new brother or sister
  • play music which has special meanings for you, or pick a piece of music that will be your child’s 'theme song'
  • give guests a special memento, such as a printed footprint or photo of the baby to take home
  • provide a time for guests to say a few words during the ceremony
  • renew your vows to each other and surprise your guests!
