Will your baby be christened? Or will they have a baby naming ceremony instead? What are the main differences between these two celebrations, you may ask? Well, we're going to explain what they are so we can help you decide which one is right for you and your baby.

Choosing Between a Christening and a Baby Naming Ceremony

In New Zealand, you must officially register your child’s birth usually within their first two months. On their birth registration form, you will need to fill out their legal name which will appear on their birth certificate. Technically, the completion of this form gives your child their name and this is the only legal requirement you must do. However, many parents feel that this is a rather impersonal way of recognising their child’s birth, and as such, choose a christening or a naming ceremony to help them celebrate instead.

A christening or baptism is the traditional option for centuries, with baby naming ceremonies being the new kid on the block. Let’s take a look at each one individually:

A christening or baptism:

  • is a religious ceremony performed in a church
  • acts to welcome a baby into the religious community
  • requires parents and Godparents to make a commitment to bring the child up by the religious values of their chosen church
  • has the baby’s forehead sprinkled with holy water by the priest or vicar
  • guests may bring christening gifts for the baby
  • parents host a reception after the christening for guests
  • a baptism certificate is given to the parents by the religious leader

In comparison, a baby naming ceremony:

  • is a non-religious event
  • is an informal celebration
  • is conducted by a celebrant, not a religious leader
  • is created according to your wishes
  • is more flexible in schedules than a christening
  • is a personalised ceremony
  • can be held at any location
  • guests may bring gifts for the baby
  • is usually followed by a reception for the guests

Whether you select a christening or a baby naming ceremony, they are both an event that allows you to celebrate the birth of your child with family and friends. If you have chosen a naming ceremony, we suggest using our celebrant directory to choose one for your baby’s special day.
